One good link is better than thousand non related or bad links. Search engines especially give great importance to links the website have on other websites. One should read the Google algorithm to understand the theory of link and its importance.

I would like to focus only in getting quality links. The quality links are those links which comes from the websites which

1- have high Google page rank

2- Related to your website topic

3- educational websites

4-do follow

Link strategy is an ongoing process. Your website will need links for whole life unless the search engines stop giving importance to links, but still link is a good source for reference.

The source of links are as follow.

1- Link Directories

2- Social network website

3- Forums

4- Blog commenting

5- Article directories

6- News wires

7- Link exchange etc

There is no need to submit your website to thousand of directories. It is enough to submit your website to top few websites like DMOZ.org . Google love dmoz which means you will get credit for that link.

Social network websites are good source of bringing traffic to your website along with links. The famous networks are Twitter, Digg, Facebook, Myspace, Google+ etc. You should consistently submit your blog posts or news events to these social networking websites. It is much better to open Facebook page and Google + page for your website. Your page will act as update sharing source of your website.

Forums are good source of getting links, recently Google is giving an importance to forum links, but one should post links in relevant forums.

Blog commenting is an easiest way to get links. One can post comment on blogs and get a link.

You can write article and submit to articles directories with having one or two links pointing towards your site.

You can break news regarding your website through newswires. You can put a link in content of your news.

Link exchange still exist if there is moderation. You can exchange link with websites which are in the same line as your website is. There is no need to do heavy link exchange. I think 30 link exchanges are enough.
